As I began putting this series together, I have attempted to write a post on how we approach the subject of Santa Claus. Each time I was never happy with what I came up with or how I was able to explain our heart on the subject. This week, I ran across these posts from Desiring Virtue. I love the way she is able to express these truths in a three part series "Why Not Santa Claus?"
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
There are many reasons we have chosen not to include Santa in our Christmas celebrations and most of them are beautifully outlined in the links above. We do celebrate this season and we are experiencing a precious time with D. At 3 years old, he is at this wonderful stage where he gets so excited about the smallest things and his excitement is infectious. We want him to be excited about the truth that God came to earth as a baby to bring salvation to the world more than we want him to be excited about a fictional man. This weekend as we were driving home from a visit with Hal's family, we passed through a town where they had placed decorations in the park in the center of town. There was a manger scene and just to the left of the manger scene was a cut out of Santa and reindeer. D looked out the window and yelled, "Look momma, baby Jesus!" I smiled and thought how grateful I am that we have chosen to place the emphasis of this season on Jesus Christ. If you have been reading R&R then you know my heart is to share my pursuit of Biblical womanhood and to encourage you in yours. I pray this post does just that. It isn't mean to condemn or judge ... only to share our journey with you.

Thanks for sharing this! My husband and I don't have kids yet, but with the season gearing up we've been talking about this topic. Just in forward preparation I guess... We know that we don't want to do Santa, and it's nice to hear from others who don't. Some friends of ours explain to their girls that it's actually because of Jesus that they have the money they do and are able to buy gifts for each other.
ReplyDeleteLove it! This brought a tear to my eyes. I admire how you and Hal are presenting Jesus to your boys in your daily walk with HIm. It's not always easy to make a choice different from what has become the norm in how holidays are celebrated. So thankful for your choice and encouragement to others!
ReplyDeleteThanks for encouraging us as we follow the direction we feel the LORD has led us . :)
